Design your own WordPress theme

Six quick steps: choose your site type, colours, fonts and layout, add your pictures, then download a block theme .zip that installs in WordPress like any other theme.

Loading the theme builder…

What the builder makes

The builder makes a block theme: the modern kind of WordPress theme you can edit visually in Appearance › Editor. Your download contains:

  • style.css with your theme's name and details, and theme.json with your colours, fonts, spacing and button styles.
  • Templates for your home page, pages, posts, archives, search results and a 404 page, plus a header and footer.
  • Your fonts, bundled inside the theme so nothing loads from Google.
  • Your logo and photos, resized for the web. Your logo is added to the Media Library when you activate the theme.
  • A screenshot, so you can spot your theme in Appearance › Themes.

Every theme is tested to install and work with the latest version of WordPress. Read what's inside a block theme to learn how the files fit together.

Installing your theme

  1. Download your theme. Keep the file zipped.
  2. In WordPress, go to Appearance › Themes › Add Theme › Upload Theme.
  3. Choose the .zip file, click Install Now, then Activate.
  4. Open Appearance › Editor to change your words, menus and pictures.

Upload not working? See how to install a theme from a .zip, including what to do if WordPress says "The link you followed has expired". Using WordPress.com? Theme uploads need a paid plan.

Your design is saved in this browser, so you can come back and tweak it. Your pictures are not uploaded to us: they stay on your device until they're packed into your theme file.
